Gas Attacks on ATMs in Europe
20 September 2005

Neil Chrismas, Marketing Director of IBP International, provided delegates at the 2005 Focus on Robbery™ Symposium with statistics, live examples and counter-measures of an alarming new trend of ATM gas attacks in Europe.

Neil’s presentation provided delegates with details of an alarming new crime wave and attack method on ATMs in mainland Europe, which involves the use of gas and explosive products.

Current statistics were presented that emphasised the prevalent nature of the problem in Italy, Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic. However, to date such attacks had not been used in the UK.

The effect of the attacks, including substantial cash loss and structural damage to property, were illustrated from post-event photographs and live video footage from Austria television courtesy of ECA.

A summary of counter-measures available from ECA was presented, including a modular system to neutralise the gas, indelibly stain the cash contained within the ATM and communicate with the alarm signal.

Delegates were able to examine the ECA system, which was exhibited after Neil’s presentation.
