‘Focus on Robbery’ launched at IBP Symposium A new academic forum for ‘top table’ security professionals was launched on 9 September by Richards Childs QPM. Entitled ‘Focus on Robbery’ the forum focuses on predicting robbery trends, monitoring relevant health and safety case-law and legislation and exchanging information on best practice.
The first conference included top speakers from the industry. Paul Fullicks, Security Director for Europe for Securitas presented on target selection and robbery methods adopted by East European gangs in other countries and the effects in the UK of the probable reduction of their £500m a year card-fraud takings through the introduction of Chip & Pin. John Hurst, previously Head of Security First Quench, went through recent case-law where employers have been held liable for neglecting to protect staff and customers. He gave the floor a five-point formula for staying out of the courts. Dick Hanks, who monitors raids for the BSIA, gave a deep insight into robberies on cash-in-transit and the regional variations in criminal methods and weapons employed. He showed how different police partnerships were tackling the problem.Alan Townsend presented on behalf of the Flying Squad, which sponsored the winners’ cup for a white-knuckle team event on five Rigid Inflatable 225HP powerboats, which followed the Symposium. The presentation showed how the Raid-control™ crime-prevention initiative was reducing the incidence of robbery on Raid-control™ certificated premises by up to 90%. There were also product demonstrations including the Ram-chain™ ATM protector and the Axytrans System, where guards have no access to the cash until it is in the secure area at its point of delivery. “You buy pavement protection and also get vehicle protection thrown in,” said IBP Sales and Marketing Director, Neil Chrismas. Richard Childs, until recently Chief Constable of Lincolnshire Police, announced, at the end of the Symposium, the construction of the ‘Focus on Robbery’ website, due to go ‘live’ in the beginning of 2005. Access will be restricted to senior security executives, whose responsibility includes robbery, police and government.
